Yael Flusberg’s Yin Yoga Teacher Training Program offered at East Meets West Yoga Center will teach you how to enhance your personal yoga or teaching practice by touching upon (t)issues rarely worked in a more dynamic “yang” yoga styles. Recommended for those with at least two years of yoga practice; the credits of the course are eligible for CEUs with Yoga Alliance for Registered Yoga Teachers.
All forms of yoga can be said to explore polarities (feminine and masculine, muscular and organic, Shiva and Shakti, ida and pingala) in order to arrive at an integrated sense of self. Yin Yoga is a quiet practice in which we hold poses that focus on the part of our bodies thickest with connective tissue — generally from our knees to our solar plexus. This passive holding in seated and supine positions helps create a safe and positive biomechanical stress on the deep layers of fascia, which gently increase the pliancy of our joints within our natural range of motion.
The connective tissue is also the home base for the meridians, which are theorized to be liquid crystal pathways made up of hyaluronic acid molecules. Yin Yoga increases the strength and magnetic pull of these meridians, which can help increase the amount of chi in the system, or better distribute it, or allow it to be more fully absorbed by the body. Yin Yoga also naturally draws the mind inward into a relaxed and reflective state, where awareness can be brought to postural, breath and thought patterns.
Best of all, Yin Yoga is accessible and beneficial for a wide variety of people at all stages of life – from yoga neophytes to seasoned athletes, from sedentary office workers to those recovering from injuries.

Your teacher: Yael Flusberg, E-RYT 500, has taught yin yoga since 2007. She spent more than 200 hours studying with Paul Grilley (credited with creating yin yoga and is an expert in functional anatomy) and Sarah Powers (who has popularized yin yoga by integrating it with both mindfulness and Taoist meridians), and went on to study Integrative Yoga Therapy (800 hours). The class will draw from materials and concepts drawn from all these teachings, as well as Yael’s studies in biofeedback, energy medicine, and poetry.
